Eight Things to Pin Down Before Buying Oak Lamella

When lamella quotes will not reconcile, nine times out of ten the specification was never aligned. Pin down these eight points and the numbers become comparable.

1. Species and origin

"Oak" is not a specification. European oak, American white oak and European oak differ in both price and appearance. We supply Eastern European oak. Ask every supplier to state the source region.

2. Length × width × thickness

Net or gross? Are mixed lengths acceptable, and what is the cap on short pieces? This drives your real yield.

3. Thickness tolerance

Pressing is sensitive to uneven thickness. We hold ±0.3 mm. Ask what tolerance the supplier holds and how it is measured — how many points, and how the value is taken.

4. Moisture content at shipment

We ship at 8–12% with the kiln record supplied. Note that shipped MC and arrival MC are not the same thing: sea time and destination climate both move it, so condition the material on arrival to local equilibrium.

5. Grading criteria

"AB" on its own is not enough — exchange samples. We sort to AB / C / ABCD / DE / EF / F on colour, knots, worm holes and surface checks, judged against the sample both sides approve.

6. End treatment

Are the ends sealed? Sealing meaningfully reduces end checking, especially on long sea legs and wide sizes.

7. Packing

Strapping, wrapping, pallets, whether fumigation or heat treatment (IPPC) is required, pieces and net weight per pallet. How it loads into the container decides how the freight spreads.

8. MOQ and lead time

Stock sizes and made-to-order sizes have different lead times. Non-standard sizes are scheduled into production, so the date depends on quantity and kiln availability.
