European Oak Sourcing and EUDR: What Flooring Buyers Should Know

Exporting flooring factories have all been watching the same file: the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR, Regulation (EU) 2023/1115). It places due diligence obligations on relevant commodities — timber and wood products included — placed on or exported from the EU market, requiring evidence that the product is not linked to deforestation and complies with the law of the country of production.

Note: scope, dates and implementing detail follow the official EU texts and latest notices. Take your importer's or compliance adviser's position as authoritative; this article only flags what to prepare on the sourcing side.

What it means for buying

The core requirement is traceability. A buyer needs to be able to say where the timber came from, who harvested it and whether it was legal. That means every link in the chain has to produce documents, not just an invoice.

Questions worth asking your lamella supplier

  1. Log source region, and to what granularity — country, region, forest unit;
  2. Harvesting and legality documentation from the upstream log supplier;
  3. Whether FSC or PEFC certification is held, the certificate number, and which products it covers;
  4. Whether batches map to documents — can this container be traced back to a specific raw material batch;
  5. Whether the supplier will complete your due diligence questionnaire.

Where we stand

Our raw material comes from Eastern European oak sources. Sawing and drying are done in our own mill, so batches map to kiln records. If you need source and compliance documentation, raise it at enquiry stage and we will verify and supply what we are able to provide.
