What Is Oak Lamella? The Top Layer of Engineered Wood Flooring

An engineered floor is a sandwich: a solid wood top layer — the lamella — over a plywood or multi-ply core, with a balancing layer underneath. The lamella is the only part anyone walks on, looks at or sands, which is why buyers scrutinise it more than anything else in the build-up.

Lamella is not veneer

• Veneer is typically 0.3–0.6 mm, rotary or slice cut, decorative, and effectively cannot be re-sanded.
• Lamella is typically 2–6 mm, sawn, carries genuine solid-wood figure, and leaves room for refinishing once the floor is down.

Sawing loses material to the kerf, so yield is lower than rotary cutting and the price is higher. What you get back is solid-wood stability and sanding life. A floor marked 15/4 mm means 15 mm total build-up with a 4 mm lamella.

Why European oak

European oak (Quercus robur / Quercus petraea) is close to the default species in flooring: classic figure, adequate hardness, predictable staining and reactive finishing, and strong acceptance in European and North American markets. We work with Eastern European oak — straight logs, reasonably consistent colour, and good yield on the wide sizes.

Common sizes

Mainstream lamella thickness is 2–4 mm. Thicker means more refinishing cycles and more raw material. Our stock sizes:

• 1900 × 190 × 3.0 mm — standard plank, the broadest-use size;
• 2200 × 220 × 4.0 mm — long and wide, for upper-mid collections;
• 2200 × 260 × 4.0 mm — extra wide, the fastest growing size in recent years.

Reading the grades

We sort to AB / C / ABCD / DE / EF / F on colour variation, knot size and count, worm holes and surface checks. A higher grade is not automatically the right grade — rustic and reactive-finish collections often want knots, and the cost works better too. Final judgement is against the sample both sides approve.

2. Length × width × thickness, and whether mixed lengths are acceptable;
3. Thickness tolerance (we hold ±0.3 mm);
4. Moisture content at shipment (we ship 8–12%);
5. Grading criteria — exchange samples if you can;
6. End treatment and packing;
7. Minimum order quantity and lead time.
