Surface checks: where they come from and whether the board is still usable

Surface checks are fine splits along the grain on the face. They are more common in oak than in most species, especially on flat-sawn red and white oak.

Cause

If temperature rises too fast and humidity drops too low early in drying, the surface falls below fibre saturation and starts shrinking while the core is still above it and not shrinking. The surface is held back by the core, tension builds, and once it exceeds the cross-grain tensile strength the surface splits. Oak has prominent rays, which are the weak planes the checks follow.

Prevention

  • Low temperature and high humidity at the start, so the moisture gradient stays gentle;
  • Sticker stack and air dry before the kiln instead of charging green stock hot;
  • Seal the ends to slow end-grain moisture loss;
  • Condition after drying to relieve residual surface stress.

Is the board usable?

The common industry test is whether the board still reaches finished thickness after planing or sanding:

  • Checks cleaned up and thickness still met — not a defect;
  • Removing the checks would fall short of thickness — priced at the next thickness down;
  • Checks running into the core (internal checks) — a defect.

One more note: finished material left in direct sun or under an air-conditioning outlet will check again. Storage position is cheaper than remediation.
