Details

Red oak (Quercus rubra) is one of the most used oak species in both the North American and Chinese markets: hard and heavy, machining well, with a bold, mostly straight grain that gains depth once stained. It is the usual choice for dark finishes.

Description: Our red oak lamella is sawn, kiln dried, then calibrated and sized, with the ends sealed. It is graded A / AB / BC on colour, knots, worm holes and surface checks, and can be sorted to your approved sample. Standard thickness is 4–12 mm; other thicknesses are cut to list.

Properties (at 12% MC):

  • Specific gravity: approx. 0.63
  • Average weight: approx. 705 kg/m³
  • Average volumetric shrinkage (green to 6%): approx. 10.8%
  • Modulus of elasticity: approx. 12,549 MPa
  • Hardness: approx. 5,738 N

Why buy it:

  • Kept in regular stock, so urgent orders can draw on inventory;
  • Bold grain and good stain uptake — better for dark and distressed finishes than most pale species;
  • Thickness held to ±0.3 mm after sanding, ready for the panel press;
  • Ends sealed, bundles wrapped, so end checking stays under control in transit.

Applications

Edge-glued panels, furniture faces and table tops, door cores and casings, stair treads, flooring face layers, interior mouldings.
